ASUS X54C Laptop Product Review

ASUS X54C running Debian LINUX

The ASUS X54C laptop is no longer listed at the asus.com website, but is available from retailers like microcenter.

I paid $259 for mine and I can tell you I am very impressed with the amount of computer I got for this price.

  • Intel Celeron B820
  • 2GB DDR3-1333 SDRAM
  • 320GB 5,400RPM Hard Drive
  • 15.6" HD Display
  • DVDRW Drive
  • 4-in-1 Memory Card Reader
  • Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD
  • 10/100/1000 Network
  • 802.11b/g/n Wireless
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I needed the ability to dual-boot this laptop in Windows or in Linux (more on installing linux later).

At this price level, you dont get a windows installation DVD.  So, the first step I did was to create a 7 DVD restoration image set using the ASUS provided tool in preparation for some later work.

What I like: Display.  Response under Windows 7.  Weight and Form factor.  Nice long power cord giving me range from an outlet.

Areas of improvement: The power cord that runs from the brick to the laptop doesnt seem very heavy.  Hopefully it does not become interimittent over its life time.

Bottom line : If you need a laptop that you will want to dual boot with linux and can hunt one of these up, you will get a lot of value for your money.
